This session is ideal for DSLs, HR leads, and safeguarding managers looking to simplify compliance and strengthen oversight.

Is your safeguarding approach still stuck at the DBS check?

Too often, safeguarding is seen as something that begins when a concern is raised. In reality, it begins long before that point, in how people are recruited, trained, and supported.

But many organisations still treat these areas in isolation. Background checks are handled by one team, training by another, and concerns are logged in a separate system. The result is often a fragmented picture, with missed details and duplicated effort.

What is needed is a shift from reactive safeguarding to proactive, connected practice. This creates greater clarity across the whole system. In our work at Patronus, and in collaboration with partners like Experian, Safeguard-Me, Cornerstone Safeguarding, and RLB Safeguarding Ltd, we have seen what that can look like in real terms.

Safer Recruitment: More than a tick-box

Safeguarding starts at recruitment. Yet for many organisations, safer recruitment still involves spreadsheets, last-minute checks, and heavy admin.

With our Experian integration, organisations using Patronus can carry out DBS, identity, online and reference checks directly within the platform. Results are automatically recorded in the Single Central Record, creating a live and accurate view of recruitment compliance with minimal manual input.

But safer recruitment is not only about checks. It also requires sound judgement, strong policies, and clear roles. That leads us to the next important element.

Readiness: clear records, confident people

A DBS check confirms someone is eligible to work, but it does not give you the full picture. To make confident decisions, organisations need to know that individuals are trained, compliant, and ready to take on their responsibilities.

This is where Safeguard-Me’s digital safeguarding passports are particularly useful. They provide a verified record of checks, training, qualifications, and essential safeguarding information, all in one place. The passport moves with the individual, meaning staff or volunteers can be confidently deployed across different settings or locations without repeated admin or delays.

For organisations managing multiple sites, activities, or delivery partners, this offers real peace of mind. It reduces duplication, improves visibility, and supports consistent safeguarding standards wherever people are working.

Ongoing oversight: building culture beyond day one

Safeguarding is not a one-off task. It is something that must be embedded into daily practice.

Patronus Safeguarding provides a central place for safeguarding oversight. From concern reporting and DSL supervision to chronologies, risk assessments, and audits, the platform supports consistent safeguarding practice while automatically keeping the Single Central Record up to date.

This kind of clarity matters. It allows DSLs, managers, and senior leaders to spot patterns early and act with greater confidence when concerns arise.

Connecting the system: What good looks like

When looking across safeguarding systems from recruitment to training and ongoing oversight, a few key principles stand out:

  • Processes are essential, but they need to work together
  • Visibility across the system reduces risk and improves decision making
  • Safeguarding culture is created through consistent actions, not just policies

The future of safeguarding is not about one-size-fits-all solutions. It is about creating systems where tools, people, and practices are connected.

Next steps and further support

If you are reviewing your approach to safer recruitment, training, or safeguarding oversight, it helps to look at how each part of your system supports the others. Where are the connections working well, and where could clarity be improved?

If your next focus is training, we recommend looking at Cornerstone Safeguarding and RLB Safeguarding. Both are trusted partners who provide practical support and training for teams working across a variety of sectors.

If you are currently reviewing your safeguarding systems and want a sounding board, feel free to get in touch. Even if it is just to explore what good could look like in your context. Reach out at hello@patronus-safeguarding.com.
